Blackburn Rovers have made four signings this summer and are continuing to push for further additions in the next 10 days

The centre-back has been the subject of an on-again, off-again transfer saga this summer. Rovers identified the 32-year-old as the player they wanted to add more experience to their defence earlier this summer but haven't been able to agree terms with the Black Cats.

They paid a fee for goalkeeper Leo Wahlstedt but haven't dipped into the market since. With Phillips leaving and now Sam Barnes facing a lengthy spell on the sidelines due to injury, Rovers are short at centre-back having released Daniel Ayala. Rovers wanted to sign Batth but only on a free transfer. He was Sunderland's Player of the Year last term but hasn't started their opening three Championship fixtures.

Rovers could offer more security with a longer contract while adding the much-needed experience their squad needs. Jon Dahl Tomasson has repeatedly reiterated the need to add older heads to guide the youngster that fill most of the squad. Ryan Hedges, 28, is now the oldest player at the club.
