Blackpool Council's Conservative leader resigns after suspension and MP complaint
The suspended leader of the Conservative group on Blackpool Council has resigned from his role following a fall out with resort Tory MP Scott Benton.
There has also been controversy over the choice of candidates Chris Higgitt and Carl Mather due to their social media posts, with the latter also being suspended from the Conservative Party following a series of offensive posts on social media that called civil service staff 'pedos', said the Labour Party 'likes to abuse children and see Britons killed', and compared US President Joe Biden to Jimmy Savile.
Coun Williams said he had agreed to give Mr Benton time to respond to the vote of no confidence before making it public. He added: “My offer to Scott to withdraw the press release was in no way meant to bribe or blackmail him into any sort of agreement to reinstate the two deposed councillors.” Mr Benton said several of the councillors named in the letter of no confidence had since told him they “had no knowledge of it whatsoever”, which had prompted him to lodge his complaint against Coun Williams. He added: “I understand that the background to the letter reflects Coun Williams’ views on the selection of local council candidates in Blackpool, something that I have no control over as an MP and which is an issue for the local association.
