Potentially toxic blue-green algae has been detected at Magilligan Point in Co Derry, the local council has confirmed.
.It can cause illness in humans and animals but is particularly dangerous for pets and has been linked to a number of dog deaths in other locations where it has been detected. In a social media post on Thursday, Causeway Coast and Glens Borough Council confirmed that blue-green algae has not been confirmed in any other surrounding locations, including Benone Strand.
A council spokesperson: "Council has been made aware that blue-green algae has been confirmed at Magilligan Point, beach users should not enter the water as a precautionary measure.
