Application for Olaudah Equiano plaque failed to meet criteria
A blue plaque for the 18th century writer and slavery abolitionist Olaudah Equiano in Belfast City Centre will not go ahead.
Frederick Douglass was a former slave who became a national leader of the abolitionist movement in America. He first visited Belfast in 1845 at the invitation of the Belfast Anti-Slavery Society and returned for a second visit in 1846. He purchased his freedom in 1766, and in London supported the abolitionist movement, becoming one of its leading figures. His 1789 autobiography, The Interesting Narrative of the Life of Olaudah Equiano, sold nine editions during his life and was influential in the passage of the British Slave Trade Act 1807 which abolished the slave trade.
In the full council minutes it states: “In closing the motion on the provision of a Blue Plaque for Olaudah Equiano, the committee agreed that the matter be progressed via the motion calling for the erection of street signage in the city centre to mark the location of important historical events related to the 'Belfast Enlightenment' period.
Alliance Councillor Ross McMullan said: “I spoke to the Ulster History Circle a few months ago about their refusal of the application, which is based on their existing criteria, and I want to express my disappointment with that.
