One backbencher said Mr Johnson could never be a unifying figure for the party. They suggested he would not win the indicative vote among MPs on Monday and, rather than standing down, would insist on a membership vote. “He will lose any runoff amongst MPs so would require the membership to overturn that,” they said. “At which point he cannot command authority in the House of Commons and possibly couldn’t even be recommended to the King.”
