An intelligence officer currently advising the Government after holding a senior position at GCHQ told“I really can’t see why the phone can’t be switched on in a controlled environment, the relevant WhatsApp data extracted and then turned off again,” they said. “The risk of any other data being sucked off the phone by fiendish Russians or others while it is powered up and switched on for a short period seems remote to me.
