A study published in Acta Neuropathologica Communications reports acute tissue injuries and microglial activation to be the most common abnormalities found in brain autopsies of critically ill COVID-19 patients.
], we found 2 brains with AD had also coexisted with LATE-NC pathology, one with AD had coexisted neocortical LBD, and one with PD had cooccurred neocortical LBD and LATE-NC pathology.Vessel disease pathology was also present; 4 brains had moderate-to-severe atherosclerosis, 3 had arteriolosclerosis and 1 had cerebral amyloid angiopathy . Of note, the single brain with moderate CAA had a low level of AD neuropathologic changes and did not meet the criteria for pathologic diagnosis of AD.
Of those decedents with dementia , all were found to have either neurodegenerative , vascular , or mixed neurodegenerative vascular pathologies contributing to their dementia syndrome as noted above. Of the older patients without a known history of dementia , six had chronic vascular or neurodegenerative neuropathologies. Specifically, 3 had chronic vascular brain pathologies, 3 had mixed vascular and neurodegenerative pathologies and two had no brain pathology.
