A screen was put in place by the side of the canal this morning
Emergency services, including police officers, paramedics and water rescue teams, were called to the scene at the Ashton Canal in Droylsden at around 8.40am this morning . Police were called to a 'suspected body in the water'.
Tragically, a man was pulled from the canal and he was pronounced dead at the scene. His next of kin will now be informed, Greater Manchester Police said.A screen was put in place near the scene off Copperas Lane. A stretch of the path next to the canal was also taped off with people turned away from the area.
In a statement, a GMP spokesperson said: "At approximately 8..42am this morning, Saturday 19 August 2023, police received a call to a suspected body in the water in the canal at Copperas Lane, Droylsden. "Colleagues from GMFRS and NWAS attended on scene and a man was sadly confirmed deceased at the scene. Police are now in the process of identifying the man and locating his next of kin."Read more of today's top stories here
