McInnes turned down the job at his former club back in 2017 but Rodgers sees no reason why he couldn't lead the Light Blues.

The current Kilmarnock gaffer famously turned the Ibrox job down in December 2017 to stay at Aberdeen. McInnes was out of the game for 10 months when he eventually left Pittodrie before taking over at Killie. He led the club back to the Premiership two seasons ago and this term, McInnes has already beaten Rangers on the opening day.

“To have that, you must have a way about you with players, especially when you’re able to do it consistently. Derek has shown all of those qualities.Rodgers is still piecing together his Celtic squad after returning to Glasgow this summer and he expects to strengthen before the transfer window closes. He might be tempted to shuffle his pack for the Viaplay Cup tie in Ayrshire but hinted that he’ll pick a strong side to take on McInnes’ men.

Rodgers praised the former England stopper’s attitude but refused to be drawn on whether he’ll be offered a new deal to stay at Parkhead. “There are other aspects of his game that he’s tried to develop, with his feet and accuracy of passing. But he’s at the stage of his career where he’s just enjoying it here. He probably thought this had passed him by - a real, big club mentality. But he’s had a great ride for a couple of seasons.”
