The public intellectual Peter York writes in an essay that populism is “a ‘thin’ ideology, short on actual policies, [which] has to team up with something settled and familiar to give it ballast. That’s usually nationalism – anti-immigration, anti-multiculturalism. Build that wall. Ban those Muslims ”. Add in misogyny, anti-woke resentment and untrammelled freedom to hurt and offend.
