UK says new Northern Ireland Protocol talks 'constructive' but gaps remain
The protocol is the Brexit deal for Northern Ireland which keeps it in the EU's single market for goodsHowever big gaps remain, particularly onEU and UK officials held technical talks in Brussels last week, and an EU team will arrive in London on Tuesday to continue negotiations.A European Commission spokesperson declined to comment on the talks.The protocol is the Brexit deal which prevents a hard Irish border by keeping Northern Ireland inside the EU's single market for goods.
A UK government source said: "The talks this week were constructive and we've heard some things from the EU that we can work with. Article 16 is the part of the deal which allows parts of the protocol to be temporarily suspended if they are causing serious difficulties or leading to diversion of trade.Ireland's Foreign Minister Simon Coveney has suggested the talks have a rough deadline of late December.
"I think that window is on offer now to the British government if they want to use it to find a way of implementing the protocol in a way that responds to the vast majority of the issues and problems that have been raised," he said.
