Plans have been approved for 196 homes on land in Clifton where the zoo had been based since 1836.
Bristol City Council's development control committee approved the plans by six votes to three.
As part of the plan for new homes, the gardens at the centre of the former zoo site will remain open to the public for free year-round.The gardens on the 12-acre site will remain open to the public and other buildings connected to the zoo will be retained at the site There will be 37 houses and 159 flats at the site. Most of the blocks of flats will be four or five storeys, with some on the northern block reaching six storeys.Bristol Zoo Gardens closed in September 2022 after 186 years in Clifton
