A British hotelier and his Italian wife who were locked up in a hell hole prison on the east African island of Zanzibar have been released.

Simon Wood, 51, had his head shaved and was put in a cramped 10-man cell with dangerous inmates, including murderers, after he was accused of money laundering.

The couple, who have an 11-year-old son, were facing 20 years behind bars over money laundering allegations after they fell out with individuals who had invested in their hotel. However, they were freed today after a judge threw out the non-bailable charge.Simon and his wife still face nine financial-related charges, which he claims stem from a ‘quarrel’ over money with ex-investors in his resort. He said: ‘We’re floating now. I’m pinching myself.

The civil court set a judgement that Simon and Francesca had six months to buy out the investors for the hotel – which they did.
