In Britney Spears' memoir 'The Woman in Me,' the generational trauma that plagues the Spears’ lineage reads like a never-ending cycle of hurt people hurting people.
There comes a time when reading critically acclaimed works of highbrow literary fiction – you know the type – where you close the book in exasperation, thinking to yourself, “How much more suffering must I be forced to read this person endure? Haven’t they been through enough?” I had that same experience, the feeling of sadness mixed with horror and disgust. But the book I was reading was Britney Spears’ memoir.
She seems to have taken every word of criticism against her personally, writing that she truly didn’t understand why pop culture commentators were so cruel to her, calling her a slut and a bad example. She fell in love with Justin Timberlake, but the relationship ended with an abortion she didn’t want and a heartbreak that it truly seems she never recovered from.
