In her first press conference since returning from Russia, Brittney Griner said there's only one way she ever leaves U.S. soil to play basketball again. “I’m never going overseas to play again unless I’m representing my country at the Olympics.'
and returned to the United States after the U.S. government agreed to a one-for-one prisoner swap for convicted Russian arms dealer Viktor Bout.and said she hopes the WNBA and the attention surrounding it continues to grow so players can earn more money.
“It’s a shame that we have to leave our families for holidays ,” Griner said. “As much as I would love to pay my light bill for the love of the game, I can’t. I think that’s probably one of the biggest reasons people are still going overseas. That’s why I was there. Hopefully that changes.”Griner said she is not at the same level physically as she was before her Russian detainment, but she is making progress in her training.I always believe in my ability.
She described shooting hoops for the first time in 10 months in San Antonio, where the U.S. government brought her to Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland following her release from a Russian prison.When asked if she was certain she wanted to return to the WNBA, Griner didn’t hesitate to answer. “I believe in me. … I have all the resources here to get me back to where I can play. It was no question to be back in the WNBA and be back playing.”Griner’s wit and sense of humor were evident throughout Thursday’s news conference. Her biggest joke came at the expense of her star teammate,“I mean, who wouldn’t want to play with a walking fossil?” Griner said, before quickly adding, “No, I’m playing. Oh, she’s gonna kill me.
