Later Antonia Valvona created the ‘twist’ ice cream cone here in Manchester, and the ice cream makers would sell their iced treats from beautifully painted push and pony carts depicting countryside scenes. The groundwork laid by Emmanuel here would lead him and his family to set up an ice cream factory in Levenshulme, numerous cafes across Greater Manchester and more than 40 vans.
Affectionately referred to as ‘Les’ by his dad Paul, the great grandchild of Emmanuel is known for a particularly sweet concoction - though rather than a penny lick, or even a milk float, it’s his milkshakes that draw people into their shop on Castle Street. “To keep people coming, we’ve always been reasonable on prices. Like now with prices going up, we’ve had to put them a little bit, but not too much. We might not make as much but as long as you’re looking after customers with nice food and good service, people will be happy, at the end of the day, we don’t want to rip anyone off.”
“When he passed someone rang up the shop and said there was nothing in the paper, so next week someone put an article in there, they called him ‘Mr Edgeley’, the ice cream man, it was a lovely touch.”
