The River Lune, which is important for trout and salmon; the Forest of Bowland Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and part of the Yorkshire Dales National Park are valuable habitats in the Lancaster and Morecambe district
Extra measures should be considered by Lancaster City Council to protect the region’s natural spaces and wildlife, in addition to international ambitions to control emissions into the atmosphere, set at major conferences in Paris and Glasgow in recent years, councillors believe.
But in addition to cutting emissions into the air, more action is needed to protect the loss of natural spaces and wildlife. Councillor Frea said local councils and others could set the agenda and lobby national government and politicians for actions to protect ecology. He said the Climate and Ecology Bill has been started at parliament and been backed by some MPs including some Conservatives. But more support was needed.
“In the UK, the Met Office predicts that there is a 50:50 chance of this happening in the next five years. Pledges such as the Paris Agreement and Glasgow Pact and updated emissions targets are not legally-binding. The gap between pledges and policy leaves the world on-course for catastrophic warming of near 3°C.
“We therefore welcome the Leaders’ Pledge for Nature, which was signed by the UK Government, which states that if we fail to halt and reverse bio-diversity loss by 2030 then we will increase the risk of further pandemics, rising global temperatures and loss of species. The UK should take responsibility for its greenhouse gas footprint, including international air transport and shipping, and by accounting for consumption emissions from goods and services that are imported and consumed in the UK.
