An online petition calling for the change has received more than 19,600 signatures from across the UK.

The UK Government has responded to calls to extend the concessionary bus travel scheme for people of State Pension age to include free country-wide train journeys. More than 19,600 people from across the UK have signed an online petition, created and posted by Ronald John Bradbur, proposing that pensioners be given free rail travel to “enhance their mental wellbeing” and allow them to meet up with others or venture further afield on a day out.

The Department for Transport added: “To help make train journeys more affordable, individuals aged 60 and over are eligible for the Senior Railcard which offers a third off rail travel.” UK taxpayers contributed some £31billion in 2020/21 and 2021/22 to the day-to-day costs of the railway. The Department for Transport said that even before the coronavirus pandemic, the UK Government was contributing over £4billion per year for day-to-day operations.

The card gives elderly and disabled people free bus travel across Scotland and, through the Strathclyde Concessionary Travel Scheme, also provides reductions on train, Subway and ferry fares.
