Formula One is back in North America, this time in Montréal. The Circuit Gilles-Villeneuve is known for its iconic “Wall of Champions” and the groundhogs that pop up every once in a while. mwc13_3 on the race weekend chaos ⤵️
“It’s a semi-street circuit, so you get very close to the walls and you need to ride the kerbs as well. Very aggressive, very bumpy circuit,” Fernando Alonso said. “Weather normally plays a big factor here, as it will do again this weekend.”
Here’s what you need to know about the track ahead of what’s projected to be a rainy home race for Lance Stroll.Lap record: 1:13.078 Montreal’s circuit is named for Canadian F1 driver Gilles Villeneuve, who won the inaugural race and was killed in a crash a few years later. The man-made island was built for the 1967 Expo 67 World’s Fair, and once the 1976 Summer Olympics left Montréal, a race circuit was created out of the roads.
Gilles Villeneuve won the inaugural Canadian Grand Prix for Ferrari, his first F1 victory. During that time, he was competing against the likes of Niki Lauda and Mario Andretti, both well-known motorsport names to this date. Four years later, Villeneuve died following a collision during the 1982 Belgian Grand Prix qualifying session, when he was launched out of the cockpit and fractured his neck. He later died in the hospital, and the Canadian track was renamed in his honor.
Long straights are split with lower-speed corners and chicanes, creating a stop-and-start feeling for the drivers. Keep an eye on Turns 9 and 14 in particular. If drivers aren’t able to navigate the orange apex curb, they’ll have to fully stay to the left of the track past the curb and “re-join the track at the far end of the asphalt run-off,” according to the race director event notes.
To prioritize top speed, the cars typically run medium-low or low downforce; however, this means the tires tend to slide more heading into the corners. Drivers can seize overtaking opportunities in these moments, like at the hairpin at Turn 10.
