The judge was told the period of gross negligence which led to Debbie's death came after a number of months when the young woman suffered terribly. Clarke had sought help for a Norwegian scabies infection - a painful skin condition caused by neglect - but had not attended follow up appointments.
"The condition in which Debbie was found shows that not only did you not do your best but that you must have done absolutely nothing to care for her in the last days of her life. Instead, you simply abandoned her to die alone, in pain, without nourishment and in the most awful physical surroundings. The suffering she must have experienced is readily apparent to anyone who has seen the photographs and read the papers in this case.
