The Government is taking an “immoral approach” towards asylum seekers, a Church of England bishop has warned. The Bishop of Chelmsford accused ministers of using rhetoric which “targets the victims” who deserve protection from “war and persecution”.
targets the victims including those fleeing war and persecution and victims of modern slavery and people trafficking. Not only is this an immoral approach that is a departure from the UK’s proud history of welcoming those in need of sanctuary, but it will fail to address the problem.”
In response, a Home Office spokesman said: “The UK has a proud history of providing protection for those who need it through our safe and legal routes. Since 2015, we have offered a safe and legal route to the UK to almost half a million men, women and children seeking safety, as well as family members of refugees.
“However, we cannot allow a system to continue which incentivises people to risk their lives and pay people smugglers to come here illegally. This is neither compassionate nor fair, which is why our Illegal Migration Bill will end illegal entry as a route to asylum in the UK, breaking the business model of the people smuggling gangs and restoring fairness to our asylum system.”
