Head of Teen Ranch Scotland, near Inchture, Bob Ockenden and son Issac will begin their epic six-day climb on Sunday
An intrepid charity chief will celebrate his 69th birthday with his son on the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro as part of an epic £200,000 fundraising quest for a worthy Perthshire cause.
The mountain’s peak sits at 5,895 metres above sea level and is known to have oxygen levels of 50 per cent and temperatures of minus 20 degrees Celsius. The interdenominational Christian youth activity centre is volunteer-run and can accommodate up to 68 campers between the ages of 10 and 17.Bob, who is staying at Teen Ranch Kenya with son Isaac ahead of the trek, has spent most of 2023 in preparation for the epic challenge.“It’s as if I have taken the year off just to do steps and go on long walks.“When I was helping building the camp out in Kenya I would wake up in the morning to look at Mount Kilimanjaro.
The former Perthshire Rugby Club player added: “I have run my marathons and played my rugby but there is apprehension and nerves [ahead of the climb]. “Teen Ranch Scotland needs a new driveway, which costs £75,000, and the sports hall needs new flooring, that is going to cost about £23,000.Bob wanted to say thanks to those who have donated and supported him thus far.
