No, your eyes aren’t deceiving you, the voice of Mario for the past 30 odd years is retiring from the role to become a Mario ambassador.
That said, he already has a new position within. The announcement states that Martinet will continue to work for the company as a Mario ambassador.
‘With this transition, he will be stepping back from recording character voices for our games, but he’ll continue to travel the world sharing the joy of Mario and interacting with you all,’ reads Nintendo’s statement. As many fans are aware, Mario wasn’t the only character Martinet was responsible for. Throughout the franchise, he’s voiced Luigi, Wario, and Waluigi, as well as the baby counterparts.
This naturally begs a lot of questions that people are going to want answered sooner or later; the biggest one being who his replacement will be. Assuming Nintendo doesn’t just recycle Martinet’s previous recordings ad nauseum.
