I was furious with my own party last week – we now have the chance to win back some respect ✍️ With Rishi Sunak over the threshold of No 10, the Conservative Party has both its best hope and last hope 🔵 CharlesWalkerMP for ipaperviews

But in the blowing ashes slumbered the awesome beast that is the Conservative Party. Just when all seemed lost, after a disastrous choice of leader, made over the summer months, the re-birth began. It took the Party no more than 44 daysDespite its public sniping, how Labour must envy my Party’s willingness to act. Remember it suffered the curse of Jeremy Corbyn for five years. So, this Monday afternoon the Conservative Phoenix rose again.

It must pain the Left to know that we are Britain’s truly progressive party. While the Opposition talks about equality of opportunity, we get on and do it – women, minorities different faiths are welcomed and flourish on our benches. And so to our new Prime Minister. He has to be the one to restore our nation’s fortunes. If he, we, govern in the national interest, setting aside all else, we have the chance to earn back so much of the respect and trust we have lost.

Will a united party be enough to win the next General Election? Honestly, it might not be. The democratic wheel always turns. But my colleagues must now be confident that if they pull together, the Conservative Party, the people’s party, will remain at the centre of our country’s political and national life. An outcome which, in itself, would be a worthy prize and a great achievement.
