The actor is gearing up to play his Marvel superhero in a new Disney+ series, but first he’s a corrupted spy in Netflix’s TreasonCharlie Cox is locked in his bedroom in a fleecy jumper and a knitted hat, with a positive Covid test. It’s a week before his 40th birthday and he is desperate to recuperate so that he and all his friends can head to Sixes, a sort of indoor adult soft play that combines drinking, cricket, and giant protective nets.
To prepare for the role, Cox read as many books and articles as he could on intelligence agents. “I’m looking for texture, or a body of water to swim in,” he explains. The approach comes from his training at drama school, which he likens to developing a muscle memory of source material that he can call on in the moment.
Cox trained at Bristol Old Vic, though he dropped out after being cast in the 2014 adaptation of Shakespeare’s“Can you blame me? It had Al Pacino in it, what was I going to do?” he says. “You can’t audition for a Shakespeare film that is starring one of the greatest movie stars of all time and say ‘I’m really sorry, but I’m still training’.” I ask him about this rebellious streak – Cox has an impish energy that reminds me of Tom Holland or Robert Pattinson.
So he went to Luxembourg to film his part as Lorenzo, who, appropriately, is a fearless young man willing to take risks to get what he wants. “I was working with unbelievable actors, Jeremy Irons, Al Pacino, Mackenzie Crook, John Sessions. It was pretty overwhelming.”
