It won prizes for its delicious confectionary
Over the last decade, Bold Street has established itself as a foodie heaven and home to many of the city's best independent restaurants - but other influential venues called the historic street home long before.
And over a century before, the site welcomed customers from across Merseyside and beyond when it was known as the Yamen Café in Bold Street. Often known just as the Yeman, the venue offered specialty coffees and confectionary and also played host to numerous local groups and societies. "Notice should also be taken of the splendid display of choice fancy chocolate creams, bon bons etc made, as is all confectionery, both cakes and sweets, on the premises, and for which prizes have recently been won at the London Exhibition, 1903." For years, the site was known for "private and subscription dances, smoking concerts, whist drives, bridge parties and other evening functions.
It has also become a well-known events space, hosting vintage fairs, art nights and music and club nights. And following the success of its Bold Street branch, the popular independent teashop and bar opened a second site a little further out of the city centre in Smithdown. The team also managed to salvage a trove of other artefacts including a Yamen staff hat, whist book and playing cards with table numbers. At the time, Natalie Haywood, Leaf’s co-founder, said: "It’s really blown our minds that this has been in our building all along, for over a century.
