Finding a certain 50p in your wallet could make you over £2k richer with just 600 of the special silver coin ever produced.
Finding a certain 50p in your wallet or down the back of your sofa could make you more than £2,000 richer after a bidding war saw a rare version of the coin sell for £2,500.
Posting the coins on online store eBay, the seller said: ”The 2012 Olympic Games AQUATICS 50p coin is a genuine NGC MS66 graded ultra-rare piece. Selling a pair of these coins, one with the lines over the face, and the other is the replacement design with the lines removed.“99% of all “lines over the face” Aquatics coins are FAKES, especially on eBay. Both of these coins have been verified as genuine by the Royal Mint, and graded by the NGC.
Each of the 29 special variants were released to celebrate and pay tribute to a different Olympic sport - from archery to wrestling. The special coins also feature a reverse chosen through a serious of nationwide competitions where applicants submitted a huge rage of design styles. The Royal Mint said: “The design was created by Jonathan Olliffe, and it depicts a swimmer in action with fluid lines struck into the metal representing the waves. In the rare first design, these lines covered the swimmer’s face. Soon after its release, the coin was tweaked to make the face more visible, but not before the first design made it out into the world.
