The ruling communist party had a one child policy for decades
China will now allow couple to have a third, amid fears that its wealth and global influence could be damaged by an ageing population.
The rules were eased in 2015 to allow two children, with officials acknowledging the looming consequences of a rapidly declining birth rate – with fears that China will grow old before it becomes wealthy. China heralded the policy as a success for preventing 400 million additional births in the world’s most populated country, which it said saved resources and helped drive economic growth.Yet the birth rate was already falling before the policy came in, paralleling trends in South Korea, Thailand and other Asian nations.
