The World Artificial Intelligence Conference in Shanghai puts on a seriously impressive display of innovation - marking China as a key player in the race to develop AI - but it continues to lag behind the US, its biggest competitor.

While it has more data than Western countries in some fields, such as facial recognition, there are factors that limit it in others.
