'A man would do almost anything to cheat death.'
Plotwise, the film tells a fictionalised and fantastical origin story about Edgar Allan Poe, one of the most influential writers of all time. Bale isn't playing Poe, however; he's playing Detective Augustus Landor, while Melling is playing the author.
Poe is called in to help investigate the case of a cadet's death when it is discovered that the young man has had his heart ripped out. Between Landor's years of experience, and Poe's distrust of the military, they might be the right people to get to the bottom of the mystery.The film is absolutely dripping in gothic atmosphere, and it looks like Netflix is positioning this to be an antithesis to all the bright lights and sparklyness of the Christmas season.
