The council is having to make choices no organisation ever wants to make

The start of a new year is often seen as a chance for a reset, an opportunity for a fresh start as we reflect on the 12 months gone and make resolutions for the 12 months to come. But such a sense of invigorating renewal will be hard to find at Nottingham City Council as we begin 2023 - for two reasons.

Councils are legally obliged to set balanced budgets, so this suggestion is clearly an impractical one. But in terms of taking a stand in calling for greater Government support, the city council's arguments on this subject are undoubtedly made harder by its recent history. This improvement journey began in January 2021, when the IAB was first appointed. The appointment of this board came following two well-documented debacles at Nottingham City Council.

But returning to the savings now being planned by Nottingham City Council, it would be ridiculous to say that such decisions are having to be made solely because of the authority's past blunders. This point is brought into focus when considering the situation at other councils in the region. Soaring inflation and what some councillors have described as a total "failure" to fix adult social care are also among the factors which Nottingham City Council rightly says are out of its control. But what is also ridiculous is discussing Nottingham City Council's perilous financial state without reflecting on its past.

Meanwhile, Ross Brown, who will take over as the councils Corporate Director for Finance on January 3, commented on his appointment by saying: "The council's challenges are well-documented and while I don't underestimate the scale of the task ahead, I'm excited to be joining an ambitious and determined authority which is committed to addressing the issues which led to Government intervention.
