He's been warned by doctors
Jeremy Clarkson says doctors have warned him to stay away from nicotine gum after being diagnosed with very high blood pressure. The star of Clarkson's Farm and The Grand Tour says he faces an "agonising and premature" death if he does not make lifestyle changes.
Jeremy quit smoking after being hospitalised with pneumonia in 2017, having previously smoked 40 cigarettes a day. But after the 63-year-old turned to nicotine gum as a result, his GP saying a "worrying rise" in blood pressure was recorded, Birmingham Live reports. The presenter told The Sun: "For most of my adult life, stern-faced doctors warned me that if I didn’t give up smoking, I would suffer from an agonising and premature death. So six years ago I bit the bullet and replaced my 40-a-day habit with sheet after sheet of full-strength nicotine gum."And this week a doctor said it's causing a worrying rise in my blood pressure and that if I don't pack it in soon, I will suffer from an agonising and premature death.
The NHS says high blood pressure, if left untreated, increases your risk of serious problems such as heart attacks and strokes. It also puts extra strain on your blood vessels, heart and other organs, such as the brain, kidneys and eyes. Jeremy said a doctor had told him a healthy person’s CRP - a substance produced by the liver, which increases when the body is inflamed - should be five but his was 337.
Speaking about giving up cigarettes after falling ill on holiday, Jeremy told The Sunday Times at the time: "I was told, by everyone, that I had to stop. Immediately. I had no choice at the time because the blood poisoning was so bad and I was so racked with the resultant rigors that I couldn’t work a cigarette lighter."
