The potentially deadly algae blooms were detected near Lusty Beg this week
Concern has been raised over the rising number of potentially toxic blue green algae blooms on Lough Erne and the impact it could have on the local economy.
Many inland waterways have been affected by increased blooms in recent weeks as pictures circulate of green, sludgy water in many parts of Northern Ireland. “We are blessed in Fermanagh with picturesque lakes and rivers and our thriving tourism industry relies upon them. “We know that large volumes of sewage has been pumped into the Lough this year and this explosion of nutrients can lead to algae blooms. With both fishing and water tourism being huge pieces of our local economy, we cannot allow this to become an annual crisis.”
