The Glen Sannox and Glen Rosa, which are being built at the troubled Scottish Government-owned shipyard Ferguson Marine in Port Glasgow, were originally due to be in service in 2018 at a total price of £97 million.
The second of two much-delayed and over-budget ferries will not be completed until May 2025 and the cost of both vessels has soared further.
But the yard’s chief executive, David Tydeman, has now said the cost for completing the Glen Sannox has risen to £130 million and the Glen Rosa has increased to £110 million. The expected delivery date of the Glen Sannox is now March 31 next year, and May 31, 2025 for the Glen Rosa. The second ship had been expected in 2024.But in a letter to Holyrood’s Net Zero, Energy and Transport Committee, he said that estimate did not include £10 million of work in progress, or the impact of assessments by the Maritime and Coastguard Agency which meant internal changes had to be made to the Glen Sannox.
Tydeman said reaching a point of design completion on Glen Sannox will have a positive impact on Glen Rosa.
