The winners will be picked from five categories: Protect and Restore Nature, Clean Our Air, Revive Our Oceans, Build a Waste-Free World, and Fix Our Climate.The premise of it all is to encourage funders, businesses and individuals to do all they can in the fight against climate change, whilst inspiring people around the world to work together to repair the planet we have distraught.

“The Earth is at a tipping point and we face a stark choice: either we continue as we are and irreparably damage our planet, or we remember our unique power as human beings and our continual ability to lead, innovate and problem-solve. People can achieve great things,” The Duke of Cambridge said in a statement. "The next ten years present us with one of our greatest tests – a decade of action to repair the Earth.

The eldest son of Prince Charles and Princess Diana first had the idea for the Earthshot Prize in autumn 2018, when he was on a trip to Namibia, Tanzania and Kenya.If you're wondering where the name comes from, it was dubbed after the aforementioned Apollo Moon landings, nicknamed Moonshot by the late President John F. Kennedy.Nominations for the next The Earthshot Prize open on 1 November and an annual global awards ceremony will be held in a different city each year for the next decade.
