The council says housing disrepair claims are currently a focus for law firms across the country

Nottingham City Council is employing more solicitors as it deals with an increase in the number of housing disrepair cases it is having to fight. The authority is extending the contract of legal professionals it is temporarily employing to boost its own team.

All this extra resourcing will be funded from the council's Housing Revenue Account, which legally has to be spent on matters relating to its housing stock. Explaining the move, documents published on July 13 state: "Disrepair case numbers have increased over a short period of time and continue to rise due to the area being the focus of volume litigation from law firms nationally.

A report from the company says fixed costs could make the models of most legal firms "financially unviable" in terms of housing cases. It is therefore thought that the number of disrepair claims is currently increasing ahead of the fixed costs regime being implemented.
