Students could get away with not paying any council tax as long as their household meet certain criteria
Many people living with a student could be eligible for a special council tax reduction, potentially saving thousands of pounds a year.
Certain discounts can be applied to your council tax depending on the type of people living in the household. Full time students can be considered for a discount on their council tax as long as their course lasts one year and includes 21 study hours a week. Both full-time and part-time student nurses can also claim this discount, however, only a handful of councils will allow the discount for part-time student nurses. If the student is living with a parent or any other adult, they may still be able to get a partial discount on their council tax for that home, however, the adult must meet certain criteria in some cases.
It's important to note that a council tax discount is not applied automatically and you must inform your local council that you believe you are eligible for a discount. If you simply ignore your council tax payments because you believe you don't have to pay it without telling the council, you will likely be sent a court summons to explain why the council tax hasn't been paid which could result in a hefty fine or even prison time in some cases.
In order to apply for a council tax discount, you can use the government website and enter in your postcode which will send you to the relevant council's website to send off your application.
