It includes over £1m in uncollected business rates
Sefton Council is set to write off nearly £1.5m of debts after the local authority “exhausted” attempts at recovery.
The report, which seeks permission for the debt to be written off, has been produced ahead of a meeting of the borough’s audit and governance committee, which is due to meet next week. Nearly £300k is as a result of businesses going into liquidation or ceasing trading, with £15k due to one bankruptcy case and a further £43k as a result of being unable to collect the debt.
Over £94k in housing benefit overpayments relate to just seven cases, with two of those being written off because the person owing money has died, three cases due to bankruptcy and the remainder due to the council having exhausted options to recover the debt.
