“In the 50s, 60s and 70s the type of behaviour that people put up with in the workplace in general, would be totally unacceptable today” 🔴 Cultural change is to blame for rise in bullying complaints - not millennials, say lawyers
Max Winthrop, a partner at Sintons law firm who has specialised in employment law for over 30 years, said the number of discrimination claims involving bullying had risen since the the 80s.
“A generation ago we might have said there was more of a stiff upper lip attitude towards conduct in the workplace or unacceptable conduct in the workplace – and I don’t see that much anymore. Each situation is taken on its fact and its circumstances, and if someone feels bullied and harassed we would expect them to say so.”
The age of the complainants is unclear, although Mr Tolley said most of them had “many years of experience working closely with ministers”.said the inquiry had set the threshold for bullying low and therefore the investigation would have a “chilling effect on those driving change” in Government. He also hit out at a minority of “very activist civil servants” who he blames for trying to block government policies with which they do not agree.
