A remarkable story
Dad-of-two Craig Poynter is lucky to be alive after suffering a cardiac arrest while playing in a charity ice hockey match. The 38-year-old chef said he was in the right place at the right time after no fewer than 11 players and spectators, all adept at performing CPR, rushed to his aid.
"I was getting frustrated at how poorly I was playing. I had a bit of a break, then went back on to finish the game and everything tightened up and I remember knowing I was going to faint. There he underwent an angiogram which showed three main arteries to the heart were 99 per cent blocked. Three stents were fitted to allow the blood to flow to all parts of the heart again.
"I've bounced back pretty well. My ribs are sore, they broke a couple during CPR, and I'm feeling tired but otherwise, I'm feeling really good, It was all down to quick care. I can't thank them enough. I'm so lucky they were there" added Craig, who hopes to return to his job as food and beverage manager at the Games Workshop by early September.
Rosea, an ambulance technician with East Midlands Ambulance Service and student paramedic, knew exactly what the implications were. The 36-year-old said: "Only one in ten people will survive a cardiac arrest outside of hospital. The timings matter. "I knew it was very, very serious from the job that I do but equally the fact he was alert automatically told me something almost miraculous had happened because it's very, very rare for somebody to experience cardiac arrest and within minutes being alert and talking.
