Just a few years after her first Paris show in 1983, fashion critics were calling Westwood’s designs “publisher John Fairchild described Westwood as “the Alice in Wonderland of fashion” in his book, and named her one of the six most influential designers of the 20th century.
Westwood famously collected her OBE from Queen Elizabeth II in 1992 wearing no knickers. “I wished to show off my outfit by twirling the skirt,” she said. “It did not occur to me that, as the photographers were practically on their knees, the result would be more glamorous than I expected… I have heard that the picture amused the Queen.
