With The Currency, Damien Hirst has achieved the questionable feat of handmaking paintings with no more artistic merit than an NFT , the line for a ringside view stretched past the door. Woodsmoke was in the air, as though we were queueing for a classy pizzeria. Devotees clutched bags of merch – totes, caps, posters, notebooks – all clad in coloured dots, traditional livery of the circus clown.
In Hirstworld, things tend to be measured in thousands: numbers that suggest industrial scale. His breakthrough work featuring maggots, a cow’s head and an Insect-o-cutor was titled is set with 8,601 diamonds. Since 1986 he has reportedly sold over 1,000 of his “spot” paintings.
