Derry native Darron Gibson was once on the books of Manchester United
There's a gift that all the great football commentators have, and Clive Tyldesley certainly had it. That knack for finding the words that the occasion demanded.
At Old Trafford, Alex Ferguson rolled the dice, and gave a surprise start in midfield towas a 22-year-old from Derry called Darron Gibson. It looked like he was going to fulfil his destiny. After all, in 2006, Gibson won the Jimmy Murphy Young Player of the Year award at United. "I don’t even think I was functioning at that point. Looking back at pictures, I was grey, if I had have kept going I would have died. I was taking 12 to 14 sleeping tablets a night,'' he said.
Gibson isn't the first footballer to open up on his dependency on sleeping pills. Dele Alli of Everton did so in July, in an interview for Gary Neville's podcast.“It’s probably a problem that not only I have, it’s something that’s going around more than people realise. Hopefully me coming out and speaking about it can help people.
Neville harked back to his own playing days to make it clear that sleeping pills have been part of football for a long time.
