They didn’t see that the man who kissed me once in the student club in Coventry then went back to high five his mates. I told the story as a joke for years, but actually I knew he’d kissed me on a dare. Every time someone told me to just put myself out there, I wanted to scream: “Don’t you see what happens when I try?”
But this story doesn’t end where you perhaps think it does. I don’t fall into despair. I feel compelled to show people the attitudes that I know lurk beneath the veneer of acceptance. I press send on a Twitter thread about my experience.The next morning, the story is covered on several news outlets. There are so many reasons that dating and relationships are among the hardest aspects of life to navigate as– and so many things that could be different. It’s not just a case of people being horrible.
