Ricky Stenhouse Jr. talks about how he keeps things relaxed, his love of golf, and what it's like going from lower series to Cup.
asks the same 12 questions to a different race car driver. Up next: JTG Daugherty Racing’s Ricky Stenhouse Jr., who returns to Daytona International Speedway this week as the reigning Daytona 500 champion. This interview has been edited for clarity and length. The full version is available on 1. You have to pick one chore or obligation to do every day for a year. But if you make it doing this for the entire year, you never have to do it again for the rest of your life.
Most of the time, I keep what I’m thinking to myself as far as like, “Oh, I would have gone right there,” or, “What are you waiting on?” I’ll say it every now and then. But otherwise, I keep pretty quiet and I really don’t think about a whole lot. I just chill. I can look out the windshield on a road trip and as long as the music is playing, I can just relax.
There’s times I just enjoy myself and do whatever. But when I’m home, I definitely track it and try and eat really well. When I’m having a crappy day, I work out. Or if I’ve already done that, I like to go golf. Golf puts me in a good mood. I wake up in a great mood knowing I’m going to play golf, so if it’s a crappy day and there’s time left, going golfing is good.
I’m not a scene person. I would just wait in line and be like, “Clearly that person is in a big hurry or they’re just really lazy and have no patience.” And that’s not my problem, either. But I will let somebody else say something first. If I’m just in the middle of a line, I’ll wait my turn.Because it doesn’t really matter at the end of the day. Unless you’re going to miss your flight at the airport — is the only time it really matters.
There’s also a lot of business that happens on the golf course. You play with sponsors or potential partners and race team owners. There’s a lot that can be done on the golf course besides just playing golf.
