of Maui has risen to 53, officials say, while warning that it will likely increase again.

“Lahaina, with a few rare exceptions, has been burned down,” Hawaii Governor Josh Green told The Associated Press. He said the death toll will likely rise as search and rescue operations continue, and officials expect it will become the state’s deadliest natural disaster since a 1961 tsunami killed 61 people on the Big Island.

The search and rescue operation is still underway, with emergency workers now reaching parts of the island that had been inaccessible due to three ongoing fires. Tourists have been advised to stay away from the island, with 11,000 already flying out of Maui earlier this week.
