New National Records of Scotland figures show a slight increase in the county while figures dropped nationwide
Local calls have returned urging the decriminalisation of personal drug use after the number of drug-related deaths in Perth and Kinross increased – despite a nationwide decrease.
Of the deaths last year, 15 have been attributed to ‘accidental poisoning’, with six to ‘intentional self-poisoning’. “We need urgent action on safe consumption spaces, specialist drugs commissions and the decriminalisation of drug misuse so that people receive treatment instead of imprisonment.” “We work in partnership with all services to provide a whole system, whole family approach that supports those most in need.“However, we are not complacent and remain committed to doing all we can to minimise the harm caused by drugs and/or alcohol and help those affected by substance use.”
It still marks a national decrease, however, of 279 deaths compared with 2021, representing the lowest number of drug misuse deaths since 2017. “Whilst it is promising news that there has been a significant decrease in the number of drug deaths across Scotland, and that the number of deaths across Perth and Kinross has declined markedly from 2020, there is clearly still so much more work to be done.
