It had been described as a 'stain on East Belfast'

Work to take down the former boys home on the Newtownards Road, which was the venue for years of barbic abuse is now underway as contractors have appeared at the site.

Earlier this year plans were approved by Belfast City Council Planning Committee for the building to be demolished and replaced with nine new apartments. The home closed in 1980 and three senior care staff were then jailed for sexually abusing 11 boys. It has long been suspected high-ranking figures within the British establishment were involved in the abuse.Survivors from the home have said that seeing the building on the Newtownards Road had been a constant reminder to them of the abuse they suffered at the hands of those who were meant to be caring for them.

It had been described as a "stain on East Belfast" and something that the community was desperate to get rid of. For all the latest news, visit the Belfast Live homepage here. To sign up to our FREE newsletters, see here.
