A wild wallaby caused a significant delay in train traffic in Eine, Belgium, for over an hour. Despite the situation being overcome, the incident highlights the occasional but unusual presence of wildlife near train tracks, leading to potential disruptions.

Dat kwam door een wallaby die zich nabij de sporen bevond. Het dier is intussen terug bij de eigenaar. Op vraag van de politie werd het treinverkeer tussen Eine en Oudenaarde stilgelegd in beide richtingen.
Een vrijwilliger van SOS Wilde Dieren in Geraardsbergen kon de wallaby vangen met een vangnet. Die bevindt zich momenteel opnieuw bij de juiste eigenaar.
"Voor hij daarnaartoe ging, werd er nog nagekeken of de afsluiting van zijn verblijf hoog genoeg is", zegt Nancy Van Liefferinge van SOS Wilde Dieren. Ook het treinverkeer tussen Eine en Oudenaarde werd heropgestart.
"De gevolgen waren niet gigantisch groot, maar het treinverkeer lag wel ongeveer een uur stil. Er was hinder voor de regionale spoorlijn", zegt Infrabel-woordvoerder Thomas Baeken. Er lopen wel vaker dieren bij de sporen, wat zorgt voor vertragingen. Volgens Baeken is een wallaby echter uniek.
"Het gaat meestal om honden, paarden of koeien. Een wallaby bij de sporen is niet alledaags. Dat heb ik nog niet meegemaakt in de afgelopen 15 jaar dat ik bij Infrabel werk.
" Infrabel roept op om goed op te letten of dieren in de tuin niet kunnen ontsnappen. "Zo kan het dier niet aangereden worden en kan de stiptheid van de treinen gegarandeerd worden", aldus Baeken.
