Desperate father forced to insulate freezing home with cardboard as energy bills soar to more than £1000 a month to heat the flat he shares with his 12-year-old son. Nigel Cleall says he has also considered moving into his garden shed.

Nigel Cleall, 52, covered his home in Martley, Worcs, with £1 cardboard off eBay. He said his heat pump failed to heat his home and left him with spiralling billsA desperate single father who was forced to DIY insulate his home with cardboard and polystyrene has managed to halve his bills after they spiralled to £1,000-a-month.

He has since spent £140 on polystyrene wall tiles which he has placed over the cardboard in his bedroom, living room and hallway. The air source heating pump installed at Mr Cleall's home in Martley, WorcsThe lorry driver says he has now managed to halve the energy bills in his ground floor flat as a result of doing his own insulation for just £141.

'I used an electric heater, which still cost about £500 a month, because while it was quick to heat up, it would just disappear because of the lack of insulation.Mr Cleall covered the walls and ceilings of his 1950s prefabricated two-bedroom property in Martley, Worcestershire with cardboard at first before covering it with polystyene

'It's now that warm in the flat that I noticed condensation on my bedroom window the other day, which only happens when it's hotter inside than it is outside. Mr Cleall's smart meter recorded that to switch his heating on, it would cost him around £1.92-an-hour. They circulate a mixture of water and antifreeze around a ground loop pipe. Heat from the ground is absorbed into the fluid and then passes through a heat exchanger.

Mr Cleall has now given Platform Housing an ultimatum to provide adequate insulation or he says he will deny them access to the home.'They have until the end of December, and if not, I will not be giving them access to my home to carry out any other work.
